To be a Christian you first have to go all-in on two beliefs. The first is that there’s a better life after this one if you live to sacrifice what most people live to gain. The second is that all of our loves and hopes are either prayers that entrust the future to God (a foretaste of the coming Kingdom), or they’re foolish hopes and dreams, sinful machinations to escape the inescapable, or fever-dream flights from reality.

I often fail to be a good Christian by seeing material, intellectual, and moral, poverty where I ought to see desperation for what intelligence, technological advancements, safety and even charitable giving in general, cannot give.

“There is one who speaks like the piercings of a sword,
But the tongue of the wise promotes health” (Proverbs 12:18 NKJV)
